"The beast we caught is a roc," Lord William said. "It's, quite simply, a giant bird of prey. This particular one is very young, and female. We believe it should be easy to rear, as the males are more short tempered."
Felix gulped, but there was nothing he could do but agree to feed the giant bird. Soon, he was walking through the door to its cell, which was dimly lit through a grate covered hole in the ceiling. In e back of the cell, chains wrapped around its legs and neck, stood the roc. The bird was at least twenty feet tall, maybe even more like thirty at most. Felix noted the two large catlike ears on the sides of its head, and the light brown feathers covering its body. Its wings were pale white, and he noticed its talons we're tipped with very sharp black claws. The roc had bright yellow eyes, and was staring at Felix with a look of interest. Longer feathers coming out from around the eye looked like long eyelashes, actually giving the female roc a feminine appearance.
Felix walked forward until the guards told him to stop, and pushed the cart towards the roc. The giant bird didn't react, still watching Felix. The boy looked back at the guards, and they told him to stay for a bit. He just sat down, feeling a bit safer knowing the roc was restrained, and waited for her to move.
Meanwhile, the roc was staring down at the tiny creature that had entered her cell. Ever since she was captured during a flight one day, she had been sulking, hoping to find someone to help her get away. Though a child in her kind's years, she was mature beyond her age for human standards, and she realized the boy might be different, and able to help her.
She looked at the cart full of food and the bucket of water hanging from it, and reached out with a talon. She dragged them closer to her, but atill didn't eat from them. Felix looked worried, and the guards shouted that they needed the cart if it was possible to get it back. Felix told them the roc had it, and it was over the line of its range, but the guards didn't care.
"Hey, if you die, there are others to take your job," one said,
"Nothing personal, though, honest," the other said.
Felix sighed and got up. He really didn't want to get hurt, or worse, but he had no choice. He didn't know why the guards cared about keeping the cart from the beast, but he assumed they actually just wanted to see him try and avoid the roc.
He moved towards the cart. The roc watched him carefully, and Felix noticed her talons twitch slightly....
