The desire to know is too great. You have to know what Dad was doing in the cellar. He had been spending a few days down there, and every time he was down there you and Taylor knew that he was making another invention. But this time was different. Mom had always encouraged you to visit Dad while he was working and learn about how he was building his inventions. And didn't mom just say not to "go near the cellar I mean it Sean"?
This paradox intrigues you even more. You unconsciously begin walking to the side of the house with the entrance to the cellar. In your mind, you are thinking about what it could be that Mom and Dad wouldn't want you to know about. But why would they not want you to see the gift? You were going to receive it anyway.
You laugh to yourself, because of the irony. You never cared about what Dad was doing, but now the one time you do care is the time that the cellar is off-limits to you.
You approach the cellar doors. The doors are tipped at a slanted angle leading to the ground. And the cellar doors have always been annoyingly screechy whenever someone opened the doors. If you tried to open the cellar doors, they would squeak and Dad would surely know you were spying on him and whatever he was working on.
