Chapter #15

"My father was a human."

"My father was human," the Kitsune said, with each word sounding more painful to say, weighed down by years of saddness, "And he saw me as a monster." Astrid pulled away from the giant beast to better look at him, but quickly found his paw in the way.

"Hmm," she mumbled. The kitsune began crying.

"Do I disgust you now?" he asked, moving his paw away. Astrid stood up quickly.

"No, not at all," Astrid said, "I wanted to try and comfort your tears." As she spoke, she approached the giant muzzle. Where it attached to the mouth, was as tall as her shoulder and his teary eyes two feet above that. "My parents sold me to those two to pay off some debts. I know that feeling of being alone." She placed her hand atop the muzzle and stroked it.

"You're parents' made you a slave? That's horrible Astrid," the kitsune said.

"It might of been, but because of it, I got to meet my savior," Astrid said, "I won't leave you like they did."

"Thank you Astrid," the kitsune said, "If only I had another tail."

"What do you mean?" Astrid asked.

"Well, I was born with two and could only make small illusions to hide me and the cave entrance. With my third tail, I could grow to this size. With the power I'd get from the fourth, I would make you a real gift," the kitsune said.

"Do you know when you'd get it?" Astrid asked.

"No, the tails come as they're needed. The third came when I was being hunted and needed away to escape a cliff they trapped me against. Suddenly, I grew huge and felt even more powerful," the kitsune said. He was pleased seeing Astrid smile.

"Wow, you really are a gifted person," Astrid said, before yawning again, "Well, it looks like I need to sleep again." She then started back to her spot on the neck.

"Astrid," the kitsune said, "When we wake, would you give me a name?"

"Of course," Astrid said, laying down. As she did, the kitsune covered her again with his paw. And both slept peacefully into the night, with Astrid slowly seeing the man in the beast.

Will this insight bring about any change in the giant fox?
