Pearl emerged from the channeling of a spirit, rather tired for some reason. Although very hard channelings would cause many other spirit mediums to faint, Pearl was usually able to return to her body without one ounce of fatigue. So her sudden tiredness disturbed her a bit…
Pearl looked down at herself and her eyes grew big with shock. Pearl was normally short and skinny for her age, but now her midsection looked incredibly pudgy. She rushed over to a mirror in the corner of the room. Her reflection looked normal, but from the side view it looked like she had a pillow stuffed in her acolyte clothes. She stuck one hand under her robes and felt cool, squishy flesh.
Just then the door opened. Maya walked in, and her jaw fell to the floor when she saw her cousin. “PEARLY? What happened to you?!”
Pearl was uncomfortable with her sudden weight gain and her cousin’s strange actions. Tears started to well up in her eyes. “Mystic Maya, what’s going oonnnnnnnnnnnnn?” she cried.
As chubby little Pearl stood their crying Phoenix came into the room. “Pearl, you’re back—WHOA!”
Maya crouched down to comfort Pearl. “Shh, Pearly, it’s okay. What was the last thing you remember doing?”
Pearl sniffed. “I-I-I w-was just training. I channeled a spirit and then…well, I woke up just now.”
“So she was channeling a spirit” Phoenix said. “That might explain why she was gone.”
“G-gone, Mr. Nick?”
“Oh Pearls, you’ve been missing for almost a day and a half. We were starting to get worried about you when you didn’t show up last night.”
“What was I doing?”
“If you were in the middle of a channeling this whole weekend, I might have a fair guess of what you were doing. Well, not exactly you, of course, but someone else.” Phoenix opened up a page in the newspaper. The picture on it showed a plump teenage girl running away from a buffet with an ice cream cone and a chicken leg. Although the food stains around her lips cloaked her face, it was easy to tell that her voluptuous body was stuffed into small robes, and her hair was done up in Pearl’s signature pretzel ponytails.
“That’s that crazy girl who was eating all the food in the buffets and stores, right?” Maya asked.
“Yeah. The police could never manage to capture her; she was amazingly fast for her size. It makes more sense if this girl was a spirit that Pearls accidentally channeled. Looks like she was dying to eat some food again.”
Pearl, growing very afraid, started to cry again. Maya tried to comfort her. “It’s okay, Pearly. You know that a spirit can’t harm the medium it’s possessing, right?”
“Yeah, that’s true,” Phoenix added. “Although in this case it seems that all the food this spirit ate had to go somewhere, and unfortunately Pearls got left with it.” Phoenix and Maya tried to cheer Pearls up. They laid her on the couch, turned on her favorite TV program and even got her a bowl of her favorite ice cream, which was almost a disastrous move.
“Don’t worry Pearl,” Phoenix said. “I’m sure I can figure out who this rouge spirit is, and Maya could find out ways to make sure this never happens again.”
“OK,” Pearl said, starting to get a little more cheerful.
