Pearl found that her new chubby tummy wasn’t that bad after all. Sure, she had never weighed this much before, but Pearl thought it made her look more grown up, and her belly jiggled whenever she poked it.
Pearl had been snacking on treats Maya had been trying to cheer her up with all day, and when Phoenix brought Chinese take-out for dinner, Pearl ate more then her usual serving. She felt sleepy after this, so Maya went and tucked her into bed.
Pearl couldn’t remember if she had any dreams that night. There was a strange, familiar sensation of flashing lights, but it happened so quick Pearl couldn’t tell whether she had dreamed it or imagined it.
Pearl stirred. She usually woke up before morning light to train before breakfast, but the sun was just rising and golden light came through the window. Pearl yawned, feeling slightly uncomfortable for some reason. She lifted her head, and gasped when she couldn’t over the mound in front of her.
She got up and dashed to the mirror in the corner of the room. Pearl was now chubby and plump all over. A large tummy poked out from her robes and over her waist. Her hips, tushie, and love handles were all flabbier, and her legs and arms looked a bit plumper. Her belly was the biggest thing, as it looked like she had swallowed two couch cushions.
She cried again, tears brawling from her face. Just as she started to cry Phoenix and Maya rushed into the room. “Oh, no,” Phoenix said. “I was afraid this had happened again.”
“Mystic Mayaaaa! Mr. Nick! What’s wrong with me?” Pearl sobbed huge, fat tears.
“It’s okay, Pearly,” Maya said, hugging her cousin. “You’re safe now, that’s all that matters.”
Phoenix unfolded a newspaper. “The moment I saw the early release of today’s newspaper, I knew I should be worried.” The front page showed a picture of that mysterious fat girl running away from a mini-mart, with the headline FAT GIRL STRIKES AGAIN. “When Pearls fell asleep, it looks like the spirit overtook her body again.”
“This is bad, Nick.” Maya had a disturbed look on her face. “There’s no way that a spirit is supposed to posses a spirit medium against their will. This must be a powerful spirit, and since Pearly channeled her, the spirit must see Pearly as a portal to the real world and it could have power over her whenever she gets unconscious.”
“Isn’t there any way we can protect her?”
“It’s going to take some powerful techniques, and I don’t know any off hand. Come on, Pearly, we’re going to go home to Kurain Village. The mediums there will know what to do.”
Maya got Pearl cleaned and dressed. The tubby child was too big for her small robes, as puffy skin poked out from any hole available. Maya and Peal walked to the train station.
