"You can't do this to me!" Maya screamed into the phone, desperately.
"Lieutenant Ibuki, please. We're not asking you to have a root canal, we're just asking you to...take a break. Relax for a little bit. Have some YOU time."
"I already have to put up with myself more than I want to!"
"That's...very sad. But we feel that you are simply too stressed these days, and frankly, it's showing in the quality of your work."
"What if an Angel attacks while I'm off on this stupid imposed exile???"
"We will be fine. There are others who can fill in for you temporarily, and we would rather they do your job as best they can, than have you perform it at less than your full capacity."
"You can't do this!"
"We can do it. And really, in a sense, we already have. You are no longer assigned clearance until we feel you are ready. Have a good day."
And with that, the bastard (some faceless NERV bureaucrat) hung up.
Rude! thought Maya.
Maya looked around her apartment sadly. This...was not good. She was a hard worker. And what work she'd been doing! Helping to save the world! Now THAT was a meaningful job to clock into every morning. But now, she was stuck out of the loop, away from the excitement/horror (the horror, she wouldn't mind so much) of life at NERV. It was crazy there, but it felt more like home than her mostly empty apartment.
And what made this worse was that she wouldn't get to see senpai...Ritsuko...for who KNEW how long. And she had to admit, it hurt her that some stranger called to tell her this, rather than senpai letting her know, face-to-face. But, reflecting on Ritsuko's beauty, and wisdom, and kindness...surely, she had her reasons. Maya was simply incapable of being truly mad with her for any amount of time.
But nonetheless, this sucked. How the hell would she kill so much time? All her friends worked at NERV, and she couldn't really hang out with them at the moment. And her apartment was little more than a place to sleep in between days. It had little in the way of entertainment.
As she pondered, she felt a slight pang of hunger.
"Eh, that's one way to kill time." she figured. Time for a bite to eat. Her fridge was almost empty, which left her with two options.
