Chapter #4

The mad rush

    by: rockstatic Author IconMail Icon
You try to calm your nerves as you spend the next few minutes waiting at the most crowded spot on the platform. It's rush hour, so there's definitely going to be a crowd waiting to get on. You grab one of those free newspapers and pretend to read it, instead staring at the feet of everyone nearby, in hopes of seeing someone with shoes you can easily grab onto at a moment's notice when you shrink.

You find a good candidate as a well-dressed woman in her mid-30s approaches the platform. She's dressed in a business suit, with her black hair pulled back in a bun. She's very pretty, but what draws you to her are her heels, which have an ornamental bow on them. You decide that what you'll do is shove past her when the crowd forms, shrink yourself down to a couple inches, and hop onto her foot. As long as you can hold on for a couple of titanic footsteps, you can then let go and wander around the train with impunity. Mission accomplished! Worst-case scenario, the woman has had time to notice you in front of her and acts confused when you vanish, but even that works for you, since it makes her more likely to slow down, and makes you more likely to be able to grab on. Perfect plan.

Soon enough, the moment of truth arrives as the train pulls into the station. Everyone begins to crowd around, waiting for the door to open, as you feel like your nerves are about to kill you. You feel the gun in your pocket for reassurance; since you're pointing at yourself there's really no need even to take it out. You position yourself behind your target, a little to her right so you can push in front with your shoulder. You hope this works.

The doors open, and the crowd first lets people exit. Then everyone crowds back around, itching to get in. Figuring it's either now or never, you fire the gun and shrink yourself down to one inch. Having never done this before, the woozy feeling and the shock of being shrunk throw you way off balance. In reality, it's not really that bad, but you're completely unprepared for it and you stumble to the ground for a few precious seconds. You pull yourself up, partly out of your drive to get on the train but mostly because the woman must be long gone, and anyone behind her is liable to step on you.

Unfortunately, your plan worked too well. The woman did freeze in confusion when you vanished right in front of you, but so did three or four other people who also saw you do it. You look up for the first time as a one-inch-tall man and see a bunch of titans still standing. You can hear them say comments like "He was just here, right?" and "He vanished right in front of us," your jaw drops at the sheer size of all these people. You can barely see up to their waists, and now they're talking about you. What if they find you?

Sure enough, you see one of the man looking around on the ground, probably wondering if you've fallen. In a panic, you run to your original target and jump on her shoe, grabbing tightly onto the little bow. You realize in terror that maybe she can feel you hop on, especially since she's extra sensitive right now to what's going on around her. You really should have planned this out better.

You have the following choices:

1. The crowd notices you

2. They all file, confused, onto the train
