Abdicating Responsibility

Alright.

That's all Caleb says over breakfast when you tell him that you're going to get Barbara Meek to summon a random student into the office for you to experiment on.

He doesn't seem unhappy about the choice, only resigned to it. Maybe he doesn't care, you decide.

And maybe it doesn't matter, you tell yourself later as you are pulling on panty hose. That's why I'm not even giving Barbara a name. Because if I gave her a name, it would be like it actually matters. Which it doesn't.

It's not a very convincing excuse for abdicating the choice to a magical robot. But it's the excuse that you've given yourself, and it's the excuse that you stick with.

Barbara is puzzle and even a little querulous when you meet her in the parking lot before school with orders. So who do you want me to call into the office? she asks. Well, can it just be some student I need to call in anyway? she asks when you tell her that it doesn't matter. To that you give your assent.

And so that's the reason, during first period, that Barbara texts you the names of five students. Gotta call these nippers in today for a little talk-to, she tells you. Want me to text you when they're here?

You recognize none of the names, and can only infer that two of them are girls and three of them are guys. You only need to see one of them, so you tell Barbara to text you when she's brought one in.
