A long time ago, there was a war between two factions. Snow Bird led her people.
The Wolves had lived in the woods for thousands of years. Snow Bird was a daughter of their tribe. She had become the matriarch and warrior for her clan.

A century ago, strangers from beyond the sea had come. Snow Bird's people had brokered a peace with them. It wasn't always easy. Especially when more clans from beyond the sea arrived in great ships.

The Wolves had allied themselves with some of these newcomers. Snow Bird's husband had come from these strangers. John had been adopted by the Wolves when he married Snow Bird. He was now a Wolf even though he had not been born one.

One day, there was a threat to John's people. The Wolves had a meeting. Everyone gathered in the lodge to decide what should be done. Snow Bird stood up and gave a speech.

"My sisters and my brothers," she said. "Our allies need our help. Shall we not fight for them? Who will stand with me?"

John, who was passionate but didn't fully understand his adopted tribe's traditions said, "I will lead as War Chief of the Wolves!"

Nobody really bothered to correct him. For they had more important things to do. Thousands of Wolves gathered to battle.
These warriors painted themselves and danced their War Dance.

There was great loss but in the end the Wolves were victorious! Many songs were sung. John often bragged afterwards that he had been a one time War Chief. And his children and grand children all knew this story!
