Kenny meets a very helpful library worker. 300 words |
The Library Lady Kenny was staggering under a humongous stack of books. A voice before him almost made him drop his burden. “Do you need help?” Hands reached out to take half the pile. Relieved, he looked at the person, myopically. “I’m Miss Dalton.” Kenny bobbed his head in a nod of thanks. “What are you looking for?” “I have an essay to write on workhouses in England. 2000 words.” He watched as she swiftly sorted through the pile, discarding at a rapid rate. He stared at the much-decreased pile that was left. “Will these be enough?” Kenny asked skeptically. “Quality not quantity is best,” she replied. He sat down at the table, pulled out his pad and began researching. Kenny worked steadily until he’d gone through all the books. He was amazed that he’d nearly filled the pad with just 10 books! Packing up his notes, he slung his pack on his back and went looking for Miss Dalton to thank her again. He asked for her at the front desk. Nobody had ever heard of her. Disappointed, he turned to go. That’s when a painting on the wall caught his eye. It was Miss Dalton! “Who’s that?” he asked an older gentleman. “Why that’s our founder, Mayrose Dalton. She felt libraries should be free to all and that there should always be trained staff to help the users. I’m her great-great-great-great grandson and Head Librarian,” the man replied. “I met her, sir. She was amazing!” “You did? I’m not surprised! She loved this place, and I believe she’s still here too. Tell me about her.” Kenny went into his office with him and told him what happened. Mayrose’s ancestor was fascinated and kept saying he wished she’d appear to him. “Maybe you should just ask her for help.” |
