Part 4 of trapper Jack and the legend of the ogopogo |
Two hours later after telling their story over and over, to a disbelieving Mountie. Exhausted the gang climbed into the Jeep, and drove back to the RV hauling the speedboat. They sat quietly thinking about the events that had just transpired. “I don't get it.” said Jack, “You're right Cole the human encroachment on an ogopogo's territory would theoretically drive it away to a safer location. Something's not right here.” “Maybe it's protecting something.” Maddie added. “A nest!, a serpent would protect it's lair.” Jackson excitedly pronounced. “We need to get back to that cliff and search for clues!” Kenzie said “You're right but to really look for clues we're going to have to go underwater Scuba Steve style.” Cole said as they pulled up to the RV. “Nina?” “You want to know the nearest Scuba Shop darling? Yeah I wazza eavedropppin on ya'll. Diving Dynamics has a place up in Kelowna dear. “Let's finish off today by heading up to the owners place for a little face-to face, and then first thing tomorrow morning we'll go to the Dive shop” said Cole formulating a plan, then pulling back onto the road. Thirty minutes later after a stop for food at the Dairy Queen drive-thru they pulled up to an iron wrought gate with a intercom box attached to a stand, and a surveillance camera pointed at them. Cole unrolled his window and pressed the button. A minute later, “Ahhhh yes, you're here to see Mr. Allen. Please come in.” came through the speaker box and the gate began to roll open. Cole put the Jeep in drive, and pulled it around the circular drive in front of the palatial estate. Cole and the gang, climb out of the Jeep and walked up to the huge double wide door. Jackson looked up at the huge knocker shaped like a gargoyles head on the front of the door. “Cool, can I use the knocker”? Jackson asked? “Heck yeah! Give it whack for me!” encouraged Cole. Jackson took the ring in his hand and knocked loudly on the door. The sound echoed dully reverberating throughout the house. The door creaked and slowly swung open. Revealing a dark skinned man, in a butler uniform. Hello, I'm Kel,Mr Allen's Butler, please come in. If you'll follow me, he's waiting for you in the study.” Kel said and without waiting for s response motioned for the gang to follow him, and he lead them through the marble entrance, down a hallway to an open door. “Mr. Allen, your um contractors are here to see you sir.” “Thank you Kel,” “Do you require anything else sir.?” “Perhaps some refreshments for our guests.” “Some water would be great, thank you, we sure have worked up a thirst.” Cole said. “Very good sir,” and Kel disappeared back out the door. “Good man Kel, when I came up here to B.C. He was my first hire, and I never regretted it” said Mr. Allen gesturing in the direction Kel had stood just moments before. “Where's he from?” asked MacKenzie “He seems to have a vague ethnicity to him.” “Oh he's from here, or leastways his family is. He's from the Salish tribe that lived in this area, hundreds of years ago. In addition to his butlering, he's advised me on all sorts of engineering issues, he has an advanced degree in engineering at MIT. I've found him instrumental in knowing the lay of the land as it were, dealing with the tribes, and more recently his knowledge of the Ogopogo lore has proved instrumental in bringing you here for instance. He's been indispensable.” “If he has a degree at M.I.T. Why is he a butler? Seems like it wouldn't be very fulfilling.” Kenzie asked. “I asked him that very question when I hired him, he said....” “I said, “this is the land of my people, and if you're going to be building a golf course on it, I want to make sure that none of our sacred sites are disturbed., and that the land is protected. “” Kel said carrying a tray of water glasses and a carafe. “Well we have some exciting if disturbing news, we found a likely place to begin our search, a cliff diver got sucked into a whirlpool, and we saw what looked like humps on the surface afterwards.” “Oh NO! This is just gonna give ammunition to those tree hugging protesters out there, talking about crimes against nature, and nature fighting back. “ “True, but this is also our first lead in the case. We plan on going back there tomorrow with dive equipment and nosing about a bit and see what we can find.” “Capital idea! Please let me or Kel know if you need anything on our end. If that is all I have a late board meeting to attend.” Mr Allen said dismissing them. Cole stood up, and stuck out his hand, which Mr Allen took in his own and gave it a resounding shake. “Thank you for your time sir, I know your a busy man, but we wanted to give you an update as soon as we could, come on guys let's get back to Nina, and get some shut eye.” |
