A tale of a cats most desired wish. For young children or the young at heart.
NOTE: My very first children's story I wrote when I was in my early 20's.

The Cat Nurse

There once was a cat that wanted to help people and be something truly great. This cats name was Audrey and she dreamed of becoming a nurse just like her owner Giselle.

But she found out something very disturbing---that cats cannot become nurses, it’s simply not done! Audrey asked a variety of barnyard animals on the farm that day where she lived if this was so.

She first asked Betty, the biggest pig in the pen, “Can cats become nurses?” The pig said, “Oink…oink…oink.. cats can’t become nurses, it’s a job strictly for humans."

Frustrated, Audrey went up to Phoebe, the biggest horse in the stable and asked, “Can I become a nurse?” Phoebe replied, “Nay…nay…nay….cats cannot become nurses it’s just not done."

Audrey was frustrated as ever. She wanted so desperately to take care of the other animals on the farm and heal their illnesses. She decided to get another opinion and this time it was from Bell, the biggest fluffiest barnyard sheep of them all.

The cat asked Bell, “Can you please tell me if there is any possible chance that I can become a nurse just like my owner?” The sheep said, “Baaa…baaa…no I don’t think so…I’ve never heard of a cat becoming a nurse."

But Audrey still didn’t give up entirely. She asked every animal on the farm that day. But to her dismay they all gave her the same answer. She even asked Midnight the black raven that perched on the fence every day for his early morning breakfast.

Midnight screeched, “Caw..caw…caw… cats can’t become nurses, you are crazy to think you can become a nurse. Why don’t you try some other profession like being a security guard for your owner or a private investigator and hunt for bugs that are hidden."

Audrey walked away and sulked. She had given up hope of ever becoming a nurse like her owner Giselle. The idea was just plain crazy.

Audrey looked down at her white medical bag with all the different kinds of medications to be given, that she took from her owner in secret. Although, stealing isn’t something that should be done, those medicines came in handy. One of the horses in the stable named Beauty was ill and weak and seemed to be sleeping more than usual.

Audrey came up to Beauty and asked her all of her symptoms of illness and she discovered she had a terrible infection that needed a strong dose of antibiotics.

She gave the shot of penicillin right away and although Beauty didn’t like getting the shot she felt so much better afterward. She thanked Audrey from the bottom of her heart for saving her life and taking such good care of her.

Everyone was grateful for Audrey’s knowledge of medicine and her caring nature for other animals. And although cats cannot become nurses, Audrey was elected and awarded a medical nurses diploma and a blue ribbon for her dedication with helping others. All the animals agreed to have her take care of them personally.

So Audrey got her most desired wish. Even though she couldn’t treat humans and work in a hospital, she could become an animal nurse and help other animals in need.

And Audrey felt special that day. She felt like she was needed. She felt like she had a purpose in this world and woke up each day with a smile and her medical bag in hand.

The End
