Written for John McLain, who fought a gallant battle in Korea and with cancer

DAY IS DONE

Dedicated to John McLain, a veteran of the Korean War, a Medic - a member of our Band of Brothers who fought his last battle with cancer

Day is done,
the battle scars healed by God,
who gave this man a will to live;
who instilled in him a sense of pride
and to give all that he could give.

Day is done,
our memories will never die,
this man who left Tennessee
to enlist at age fifteen to go
where he knew he needed to be...

Day is done,
his hands reached out to those
who were wounded and in pain,
there are many whose lives were saved
by the healing touch of John McLain.

Day is done,
he came back home, with the war
embedded in his soul and mind,
for every soldier he fought to save
and weeping for those left behind.

Day is done,
the man whose family was his life
in the years after Christmas in July,
proud to join the Band of Brothers;
still reaching out, not asking why.

Day is done,
gone our son, gone our brother -
ravaged by cancer, he will not be
at the reunion this year, but know
that his spirit is finally free.

Day is done,
moments of silence echoing
his words, his love and dreams;
life is not always bitter,
death not always what it seems.

Day is done,
gone to rest, we've been blessed
for having him share our lives,
touching us in such a way that
leaves us searching Heaven's skies.

Day is done,
though he has gone home at last,
the battle's done, he has won
a place deep within our hearts
so very long ago, in Korea, begun.
