You should really read 'The Girl in the Mirror' first. I wrote this several years later.
Time has passed since the days before,
and I find I must look in the mirror once more.
Through innocent eyes a girl I once saw.
A woman now stands face turned to the door.
Waiting and watching for handle to turn.
For someone to enter, no longer alone.
Fear is her enemy. She'll never learn
to let someone in, their love not to spurn.
I reach out my hand for the touch of her face,
search for reaction, but find not a trace.
Once there was attitude, now there is lace.
Abruptness of answers now covered by grace.
They stand in shadows, but she stands apart,
searching for faces she lost in the dark.
Smothered there, buried, deep in her heart,
protected from pain the permanent mark.
