At the end of a dead end relationship.
Tears fall,
without note,
landing on muddy ground
Moistened by thoughts
and dreams of great hope.
I’ve been here before,
and I do not fear.
I take off my shoes
and walk through the saturated earth
Feeling the mud seep between my toes.
For the moment,
the spent hopes and dreams
ground me to the reality of myself,
but I like the feel of mud on my feet,
So I have no remorse.
My carefree walk
has my feet slipping and sliding.
I eagerly anticipate falling:
immersion sounds kind of good.
Then I steady myself.
Soon I will reach dry land,
and my feet will feel the support
of uncorrupted earth,
and I will build new dreams
and have new hopes.
Yesterday’s losses will no longer
hold my feet to the ground.
I can build with my hands and heart
a foundation capable of keeping me
above the past’s quicksand.
The mud between my toes reminds me of who I was.
And I remember: those memories define
The reason I live today.
