About the daily worries New Yorkers go through due to 911 and the Blackout
Pretty Ugly

Packed like sardines,
We just can’t keep clean,
So we wear mostly black
And are prepared for attack.

Carrying ourselves in the daily grind,
Thinking about what was left behind.
Dwelling on catastrophe’s past;
How long will it last?
Can’t we just move on
Knowing whose gone?

We still haven’t the space
For our minds to erase
The memories of yesterday~
They just slowly
fade
away.

Anxiety takes part
In the reasons we protect our hearts.
Many walking think only of themselves
They could share their lives with someone else.
Few readily plant the seed
Because they are too filled with greed!

We hold on to these poles
Hoping to maintain control
When our lives remain unplanned
Because, simply, of where
we
stand.

Grimy gum-filled cement,
Homeless stench that sure is potent.
We’ve built buildings upon buildings
So we don’t have space for feelings,
While we poison ourselves with expense and toxins
Like we’re doing the right thing:

Alcohol, drugs, cigarettes,
Sweets, fast food, lotto tickets.

We have no room to mind our own
And we’re all just trying to get home..
There are much better things to worry of
But you just keep
getting
shoved!

We seek refuge away from disaster
And try to get everywhere faster
But we can’t go faster when we’re crammed
And our fate can be in someone elses hands
Just getting home becomes an obstacle
That makes people numb as well as null.

Angry shouts bite your claim
Inside this city with no other name,
Where pain is a threshold accepted by few
And people gawk at someone new.

This grand place called New York City,
It’s a place that I love, but it sure
Aint
Pretty!
