about my pet ferret who amuses me as he plays (free verse)
little woofers,
where are you?

are you dancing
with the mop strands
or in the mop bucket
filling it with your wiggles?

are you between the cat parentheses
on the couch
or under the couch
playing dodgeball
with the dustballs?

little zig-zag-ripper,
where are you?

are you speed reading
under the newspapers
by the dining room table
crinkle, crunch, you're done?
Are you hiding under the hutch?

little giggle-snort,
where are you?

are you under the
rosed hued cover of the bed
part of a fling of sunrise?
are you snuffling along the
garden on the bedroom carpet?

little exclamation point,
where are you?

are you playing catch me
from beneath the microwave cart?
are playing chase with the crumbs
under the kitchen table?

little puff, huff,
where are you?

are you hiding behind
the washing machine
trying to dig new holes
on the linoleum,
scritch, scratch, whee?

little ferret, Bradley,
where are you?

oh, there you are
galumping, thumping,
across the kitchen floor
attacking my shoe laces
chuckle, chuckle, chuckle,
both you and me,
except my laughter is louder,
and yours is the soft laugh
of a baby critter.

hey, I don't need
my fingers bit!

giggle, wiggle, chuckle
I love you.
