Did you ever think you would fall apart after a breakup?
I can see him turn his back
and start to walk away.
After everything we have been through
the very thought of losing him makes me
teeter on the brink of insanity.
My mind races for something to say
that will make him come back and love me again. But I keep drawing a blank,
all I think about is how my life
will be nothing without him in it.
He opens the door to the car and gets in.
The first tear slides down my cheek
caressing my skin in a way
he hasn't done in a long time.
The door closes.
"O my God he's really going to leave."
With the start of the engine
I realize I have to do something now
or I am going to lose him forever.
I take a step toward the car,
but inside I'm already feeling strange
almost hollow.
My foot touches the ground and starts to crumble. All I can do is stare down in horror
as my feet and legs turn to dust.
I reach out my hand toward the car
only to see it disappear in the wind
leaving a little trail of dust.
And I watch as the ring he gave me
slowly falls to the ground.
I try to scream his name,
but all I can taste is dirt.
I feel myself disintegrating
and being carried away by the wind.
He turns around in his seat
just in time to witness my last moment
truly alive and then I'm gone.
He gets a sad smile on his face
and thinks maybe this is for the best.
Putting the car in gear, he starts to drive away. In the review mirror he can see
some dust dancing carefree in the wind.
And a silver ring laying on the cold,
hard ground awaiting winter
so it can be covered and forgotten.
