Special friend from yesteryear
Your recent visit has rekindled our past.
I remember the long walks in the solitary snow
Carrying our ice skates to a frozen pond
In a cemetery or a park.
And the shovel that we carted to forge a footed path
Just to go to the movie show.
Our frolic and play on sun drenched days.
The songs we sang, the games we played
The dreams we shared through adulthood.
The vow we made to remain dear friends
Even as we went our separate ways.
And it all began the day we met
On our first day of grade school
A chubby me had difficulty
Finding someone to share their seat with me.
All it took was a wave of your hand.
As we sat together through most of our classes,
That day we became special friends forever.
