On pessimism and depression.
Sometimes reality gets heavy and the world outside seems to fade into a series of blasphemous blues and greys. Trust me. I've been there. And when I was there, I personally found solace in the writings of various bitter old German philosophers from the 19th century. Pessimism is an interesting phenomenon. What makes it so interesting to me is that so few succumb to its powerful grip in the midst of a real existentially threatening crisis. "The show must go on" as the great Freddie Mercury once said. How is it that somebody can be riddled with disease, have long grey thinning hair and gnarled knuckles, yet still maintain the same level of equilibrium that bought them to that very point in space-time? It's a question every depressive ought to ask themselves. One possibility is that the majority of human beings are idiots and you know better, which I always thought unlikely. But perhaps everything is relative and a matter of interpretation, in which case why would you choose to focus on the darker sides of the universe? Or maybe things aren't as horrible and decrepit as they appear from our limited perspectives. Take a look at the night sky tonight. Look up at the uncountable ancient photographs of light beaming at you directly from the heavens above, then tell me honestly if you can't perceive beauty in that wondrous mosaic of natural existence. And if you can't witness what most of us witness, I ask you this... why are you still here? That's the real question.
