Marcia smells something off. 300 words
Trust Is Earned

“I don’t trust them,” Marcia muttered as she closed the door on them. I’ll call Peter.”

She quickly autodialed his number.

“Why, Marcia! Good to hear from you. Ready for our second date?” said Peter Somers when he answered.

She said something non-committal and plunged right into her concerns.

“A couple of people came knocking on my door. I got the strangest vibe from them. I started to listen to their spiel, but it felt odd, so I closed the door in their faces. Now I’m worried.”

“Did you check with your neighbors? Were any of them approached? How about I come by when you’ve talked to them, and we’ll figure out what to do.”

“I’ll call you if I need you, Peter. Thanks for the advice.”

Marcia stood with her phone in her hand briefly. Then, she called the local cop shop.

“Let me talk to the Chief,” she said when she got an answer.

“Chief Ombre.”

“Hi son, busy day?”

“Not so much, Mom. What’s up?”

Marcia explained it all to him, then invited him to dinner.

“Come for six, it’ll be dark then.” she said before she hung up.

That evening, they had just finished eating and she and her son were doing the dishes and laughing.

“Wait, listen!”

They stopped. There were sounds of breaking glass. Her son drew his gun and moved toward the back door. There was the sound of a scuffle, a shot was fired. Then silence. Marcia called out the troops and prayed.

“Police!” was shouted through the door. Marcia let them in. Minutes later, three people were being marched out in cuffs, one of them being Peter Somers. Her son came out with them.

“Oh, thank goodness you’re all right, son! Marcia cried as she hugged her boy.
