As sunlight slipped 'neath the window shade,
I finally woke from the land of Nod.
I could have built a house in my dream,
considering all the logs I sawed.
When I turned my head to check the time,
a papery crinkle startled my ear.
So I rubbed my eyes and waited for
the muddle in my head to clear.
When, finally, my brain awoke,
I groped for the source of the scratchy sound,
and discovered a note someone had left
while I'd been lost in dreams profound.
The room was still too dark to see
what words were waiting to be read.
So I reached up and turned on a lamp
that hovered just above my head.
When I sat up straight and looked around,
I spotted a shiny coin, just one,
beside the note I'd already found,
which, I hoped, would provide a clue.
The coin was a penny, to my dismay,
but the note explained the reason why.
It said there'd been no tooth to find,
so the usual amount would not apply.
As far as I knew, I hadn't lost a
single tooth for quite some time.
But a penny doesn't buy a lot.
At least she could have left a dime.
