The Chase And What Came After

“They’re after me!” the woman gasped as she ran in the double doors of the police station.

A policewoman grabbed her as she tripped and just about face-planted on the floor in front of the desk that dominated the front of house.

“Who’s after you?” asked both the desk sergeant and the policewoman at once.

“I don’t know their names. But they looked nasty!”

“Let’s start with your name for the record, the sergeant said as he pulled out a form.

“My name is Lydia Rawlings. I was walking home from the mall because it was such a nice day,” the woman began from her seat on the bench that the policewoman had led her to.

“Take your time, Ms. Rawlings, catch your breath a little,” the policewoman suggested.

“I saw the first one outside the mall. He was so cute I couldn’t resist. So, I offered him a cheese curd from the bag I carry in my purse for energy lifts.

He started to follow me. I shooed him away a couple of times, but he kept coming. Next thing I know, there are at least nine more behind me.

They kept getting closer and closer. Now I’m not usually squeamish about being followed, but they were all different sizes and colors, and they kept closing the gap between us. Finally, I couldn’t take the pressure and more and I started to run.

I got frantic when they all began to run too. So, I ran straight here for help.”

The policewoman went down to the door. She looked outside and what she saw made her smile broadly.

“Better call the pound, it’s the Main Street Gang. It’s best if you don’t feed the street dogs around here Ms. Rawlings, they get attached.”
