Beginnings

As I shut the door, hearing the lock click, I realized I’d forgotten my purse. Usually, I have my car keys in my hand, but I had so much to carry, I’d decided it was safer to leave them in my purse till I got into the car. If I dropped them in the snow, they might be difficult to find. Now, the front door was closed and locked, and the car door too.

I left the packages on the porch to keep dry, and tip toed over to where the snow shovel was leaning against the house. No boots, because I was going to the church to drop off things. I had no intention of walking in the snow. I already had a lovely path from the front door to my car. Unfortunately, now, I had to slush around to the back door where I had my hidden key. Three steps later I knew I would also need another pair of shoes.

As I finally got to the back porch, and found my key, I stood in the doorway to take off my frozen shoes. Looking up from this, I got a surprise! There was a deer right in my back yard! I had never seen one here before, even though I’d lived here for eons.

Standing there, I could see the path it had taken through a small crop of trees at the edge of my land. The trees were a buffer to fields beyond, all empty now. They belonged to a local farm. I suddenly wondered how deer survive in winter, what do they eat?

That was the beginning for me. I didn’t even have a pet then, but now, six years later, I have deer in my backyard every day, all year long. Isn’t life weird.
