The Video Jane heard her husband Ted calling Alex to the living room. “Here we go again,” she said to herself, grabbing her recorder. She snuck over to the doorway, and turned it on just as six-year-old Alex walked in. “What’s up Dad?” Alex asked. Ted started, “Do you see anything out of place in this room?” Jane could see them both. Ted standing, hands on his hips, and Alex looking all around. “No?” Alex said. “Alex,” Dad started, “this is the living room, not your playroom…” “Oh, you mean my stuff, right?” “Yes. Didn’t we just empty this room of toys yesterday?” “Yes, yesterday…” “So why are there new piles of toys everywhere this morning?” “They’re not new. I got the blocks last year, and the truck even before that…” “I didn’t mean ‘new’ like brand new…: “Do I have the wrong brand ones? What kind of brand should they be?” “No, I didn’t mean brand like the company who made it…” “Company? Are we having company today? Who’s coming?” “No. We are not having company, I don’t think…” “Ever?” “What?” “You don’t ever think? I thought everybody thinks. You always tell me to think about things before I do them and stuff. You don’t think?” “I do think. We are not having company. The toys in the living room are not new, but your toys should be in your room, not in the living room. That’s why I had you move them all to your room yesterday…” “Oh. I thought you just wanted me to carry them in there because I wasn’t playing with them anymore.” “Yes, that’s true…” “But I am going to play with these toys now…” “Oh…” Dad said sounding defeated, “OK…” and he left the room slowly.
