Always December again. So much work! I know Christmas is wonderful. However, “we” don’t seem to be interested in getting all the gear going. Oh, sure, Dad brings the kids out for the tree and we always have a family tree decoration afternoon. But a tree is only one thing… At my house, though not decided by me, but by the other “grownup” in the family, we need a few more things. A wreath on the door, of course. I don’t have to make a wreath, but I do have to find a way to get it to stay on the front door, and light up every night from when it’s purchased, until January. Then add the lights on the bushes next to the front door, can’t forget that! Yes, every bulb has to be checked and some replaced, another timer set (thank goodness they invented timers!) And the tall male in the family apparently has to go out after it’s all set up, and fix it… Oddly enough even after all these years I apparently never get it quite right. And of course, the mistletoe. It was a family tradition when my husband was growing up. It always needs to be hung in the hallway at the front door. Fine with me, I never use that door anyway. Ooh! Did I just say that? I’m sure I meant I love it! As the days go by, as the decorations go up, presents bought, wrapped, plans made, invites to Christmas dinner sent. Shopping, shopping, shopping. Coming and going (through the back door…) Christmas builds. Suddenly the work seems worth it. Suddenly Christmas is finally here, and we are ready. I look around at weeks of decorating, our beautiful tree, the thought of Christmas morning… It’s worth it, it’s always worth it. |
