The first moments of life
Title: First Breath

Characters:

Adam – The first man, reflective and innocent, wrestling with his newfound consciousness.
Voice of God – Gentle, yet powerful, guiding Adam as he discovers his purpose.
Setting: The Garden of Eden, lush and vibrant with trees, rivers, and animals grazing peacefully. Adam stands alone, taking in his surroundings with awe.

Scene: Adam stands alone in the Garden, looking at the lush trees, breathing deeply as if each breath connects him to the earth itself. He examines his hands, touches his face, then turns his gaze to the sky with a look of wonder.

Adam:
(softly, to himself)
Where… am I? And who… am I? (Pauses, touching his chest.) I am… alive. And I am… Adam.

(He looks around, marveling at his surroundings. He kneels to touch the grass, caressing it as if it were something fragile.)

Voice of God:
Adam.

Adam:
(startled but comforted)
Who… are You?

Voice of God:
I am the One who formed you. I am your Creator, the One who breathed life into you, Adam.

Adam:
(rising, looking upward)
I… I feel it, the breath. I am filled with it. And all around me… it’s beautiful! You… You did this?

Voice of God:
Yes, Adam. I made this garden for you, a place for you to live, to care for, and to grow in. Look around—each tree, each creature, each river was made with purpose. And you, Adam, are the keeper of it all.

Adam:
I feel… I don’t know the words for it. Something so… wonderful! But there is so much I don’t know. I am here, yet I do not understand… why.

Voice of God:
Your purpose is to know Me, Adam. To live, to love, to tend to this world I have placed in your care. I made you in My image; you are unique among all I have created.

Adam:
(pause, deep in thought)
But what does it mean to be in Your image? I see the animals—they walk, they breathe, they live as I do… yet I feel something in me that I don’t see in them. A longing… a question that does not have an answer.

Voice of God:
(smiling)
The longing is good, Adam. It will guide you toward Me. You were made to seek Me, to walk with Me. I will be with you and teach you in all things.

Adam:
(looking upward with determination)
Then I will walk with You, and I will seek You. But… (pausing) why am I alone?

Voice of God:
That, too, will soon change, Adam. I am making a helper for you, one who will be like you, to share in your joy and your work. She will complete you.

Adam:
(lighting up with joy)
A helper… like me? (Pauses, looking around in anticipation) When?

Voice of God:
In time. For now, enjoy this garden and learn its ways. Tend to it, name each creature, and walk with Me. (A gentle pause.) You will see that I have made all things good.

Adam:
Yes, Lord. I will care for it. I will learn and tend to each one as You have asked. And I will wait… for the one You bring to me.

(Adam kneels down and places his hands in the soil, lifting some earth to his face and breathing it in with reverence.)

Adam:
Thank You… for this life, for this place, for Your presence. (A soft smile) And for the breath that fills me.

Voice of God:
(smiling)
It is My gift to you, Adam. I am with you, always.

(The scene fades as Adam, filled with peace, walks deeper into the Garden, discovering and marveling at the beauty around him, a solitary yet sacred beginning to his journey.)

End of Play.
