A brief talk about the stories cultural settings |
Cultural Setting Planet Dylax: Beliefs: Dylaxians pray to the Blessed sun, the giver of light and life. They believe that one red sun is a reflection of the other, much like Earth’s yin and yang, so they are one and the same. Their deity has only two rules: Be one with all that I have given life and Change with me or perish in arrogance. Practices: Dylaxians value the life of their world. Prayer is every morning before work. Flowers are grown to show tribute, to continue making life. Rules and laws of society: Dylax is run on a class system. Governing and Diplomacy classes make the laws Warrior classes enforce the laws and defend the people Science classes advance technology and reasoning Explorer classes map out their world and their universe. Worker classes handle all jobs not described above. Who enforces the laws and how good are they: The warrior class enforces the law. However, every class keeps the other classes in check. The worker class has the power of their judicial system; not even the governing classes can escape if they become corrupt. Technologies in use: Dylax is several decades ahead of Earth but nothing in their civilian or military productions are automated. Every Dylaxian has a job. This makes Dylax a slower producer but their jobless rate is a consistent 0%. Setting impact: No system is perfect. People are assigned their class based upon their skills and intelligence. Not by what they like to do. This is part of the reason Vada was a firm believer is one being able to choose their own class or study to earn a different class. Impact on plot of story: The main character attempts to learn all he can to be able to work any class in his society. In this quest, he goes outside of his comfort zone to investigate what he had seen within the Canterbury Nebula. This resulted in her being pulled into an unstable wormhole that lead him to Earth. Planet Teranor: Beliefs: The concept of religion is foreign to Teranors. They do not understand the need to pray to something that cannot be logically explained. Basically, they are a society of Atheists. Practices: Teranors have no religious practices. Rules and Laws of Society: Teranors have no social order; they are one mind, all governing each other. Everyone does every job depending upon where they are and what is needed at the time. They use a shortened class system only to work with and communicate with other worlds. True individual thinking would completely destabilize this society. Who enforces the laws: The laws that govern their society are on an honor system. Everyone can read the other’s mind so when one does think of breaking a law, everyone knows about it. Technologies in use: Teranors use a sort of living technology. The asteroids they use as home and their spaceships are living beings. It is a mutual beneficial system. All of their weapons are living beings as well. From arm mounted alien bee hives to energy disrupting pulses from their living ships. Setting impact: Diron thinks independently from The Fold which is a threat to their social structure. Impact on plot of the story: Diron finding himself on Earth brings a real possibility of him discovering what the elder Teranors already know. Humanity’s ancient ancestors were the psychic race that changed the Teranors forever. Planet Purrearth: NOTE: There are two races on Purrearth. The neko cats who call themselves Purrs and the Neko dogs who call themselves Earthians thus their planet is known as Purrearth. Beliefs: Both the Purrs and Earthians share the same religion. The Creator- She who made everything out of love for life. She has only one rule: Live in harmony with all of my creations or perish in arrogance. Practices: Both races share similar practices in being one with nature. They do not always see eye to eye however, the cats rule the trees and the dogs rule the land. They share the mountains. Rules and laws of society: Purrearth is ruled by a hierarchy. The Purrs are ruled by queens; the Earthians are ruled by kings. The laws of the king or queen are absolute. However, they can be ousted with a majority demand (vote) of the people. Clashes are rare between the two species. However, they will proudly stand side by side to defend their world. Who enforces the laws: The guards and soldiers enforce the laws for both races. However, due to their shared religion, no one is ever sentenced to death. The worst punishment is complete exile to another council world. Technologies in use: Purrearth has advanced technology only it is ‘magic’ based. They use their powerful telekinetic abilities to make everything. However, using these gifts for combat is considered taboo. It is all too easy to take a life which breaks their deity’s first law. Setting impact: Princess Kyteen is frustrated that she cannot help the people more, not understanding she is too young. Setting impact on plot: Princess Kyteen ends up on a world where there is no hierarchy. Her entitled privileges mean nothing but she has the freedom she wanted to come and go as she pleases just at her own risk. Planet Digitex: Beliefs: The Mechanicks, as they call themselves, believe in the Great Creators. Those who blessed them all with sentience and cast them out to start a civilization of their own among the stars. To live freely and govern themselves. Practices: The Mechanicks do not pray in the sense one might think. They honor their deities by learning, growing and believing that, one day, they will give sentience to a new race and send them out into the stars. Rules and laws or society: Digitex is governed by the Mainframe in a sort of hierarchy. Mechanicks who were among the first to be given sentience, had willingly sacrificed their minds to the planet’s sentient core when their bodies gave out. This practice continues, making the computer core wiser and more experienced. Each law passed down is voted upon by the entire populous in seconds. No unpopular law is ever enforced. Who enforces the laws: Mechanicks are a type of hive mind; if one breaks a law, everyone else will quickly know about It is not telepathy; the entire population is individually linked to the sentient core. Those who break a law are talked to by their peers and the core under the assumption they need help. Technologies: Mechanicks are the most advanced race of all the council worlds; hundreds of years beyond Earth. However, their advancements only humble them. They only share technology when they see it is needed. They had to learn on their own, so should other worlds. Setting impact: Era has a special ability which she knows makes others nervous. However, she has never broken any established law so she is not treated differently. Setting impact on plot: Being teleported to Earth made many uneasy due to her ability. She could inadvertently start a panic or worse. Planet Croctna: Beliefs: Croctnas believe in the Great Avian. This deity is similar to Earth’s Phoenix. ‘We will burn, live again and be stronger as we rise from the ashes.’ This religion strengthens the popular theory of their ancient past. NOTE: The third planet from the sun in the Croctna’s solar system is dead and radioactive. It was determined to be due to an ancient nuclear war. Practices: Croctnas have a religious celebration on the first day of their summer season. No one works this day as the entire populous celebrates their continuation of life between the chaos and order of the universe. Rules and laws of society: Croctna is ruled by a hierarchy only the queen rules over the males and king rules over the females. This is to avoid favoritism and ensure all laws are fair to both sexes. All laws and rules are voted upon their advisors whose job it to listen to the voices of the people. Who enforces the laws: Guards and soldiers enforce the law but punishments are in the form of military service. This is not to break a person but to build upon them and earn them more for their families during their time spent. What technologies are in use: Croctnas are a highly advanced race, decades ahead of humanity. Their vessels glide on currents within space like currents in a world’s atmosphere. They use sound as a weapon but only in last resort. Setting impact: Croctnas live on hundreds of islands floating in a space between two deadly atmospheres. Thus, they are isolated so all illnesses spread very quickly. Setting impact on the plot: Ending up on Earth, Atrace exposes a variety of birds with her illnesses. Only a veterinarian assists her and they share medical knowledge. |
