Sweet End
276 w/c

As the elderly widower stepped through the screen door it squeaked and pulled shut with a gentle thud. His hearing aids working well, as he can hear the blaring TV from the Peytons house across the street. Her hearing aids are probably not working he thought.

Newscaster “Now for the local weather. Looks like a good day for ducks, high chance of storms .......”

the sound drifts off as he sets his attention on the outdoors.

Looking out the wide porch length windows he could see a thunderstorm rolling in. Good he thought, will ease the heat a bit. He sat down on his porch swing and took a sip of his tea as he gazed out toward the dark storm clouds. A glint of light caught his eye, and he heard the screen door squeak open, causing him to turn his head and see who was coming through the door. His glass of tea slips through his fingers as Lainy stepped out onto the porch and moved gracefully with a beautiful smile toward him, holding up a finger as she moved to hush his lips.

“Ssh don’t say anything, honey. I’ll get you another tea.” she says with a smile, a smile that he had missed for over 10 years.

“Lainy dear...!” he choked, “you’ve been gone so long!?”

“Yes, I know, but hush now! I’ll never leave you again. I know a secret!!” she says in a hushed tone, smiling as she moves to the screen door to get his tea.

Newscaster, “And today we have lost a local resident to a lightning strike as the storm has passed over us.”
The sound drifting out.
