Ken and Duncan enjoy their monthly coffee and donut morning at the diner. |
Coffee With Duncan My friend, Duncan, and I were at our local diner earlier today. We differ in many ways, but we have been friends since high school, many moons ago. We look past each other’s quirks. “Autumn is finally here!” I said as I added cream to my coffee. “Darn leaves all over the place,” he said, with his face scrunched up, which only made his new dentures look worse. Oh my gosh, Duncan looks like Mr. Ed. “You don’t have to rake them anymore,” I said as the corners of my mouth turned up. “What’s so funny, Ken?” “Nothing.” I sipped my coffee and looked out the window. “Not a cloud in the sky!” “That doesn’t mean it won’t rain. Those storm clouds move in fast.” “True,” I said as I bit into my glazed donut. “I love the cool weather.” “Yeah, until it turns cold. Winter is a bugger!” “True, but snow is beautiful.” “Not if you have to shovel it.” “True,” I said as I looked at my watch. “Oh my gosh, look at the time! My daughter will be at my house in ten minutes. I have just enough time to get home if I leave now.” I dropped money on the table to cover my part of the bill, shook Duncan’s hand, and slid out of the booth. “See you next month, Duncan. Donuts on me!” “Unless the world ends.” “True,” I said and hurried out the door. Gotta love the guy! I told you we were different. |
