A slave is on the run and looking for help from nature.
I’m runnin’ for my freedom
runnin’ in the dark
that North Star supposed to guide me
but them clouds just hide the stars
I hear them dogs behind me
I’m runnin’ as fast as I can
but these trees and these bushes
be trippin’ up a desperate man

Thickets and them brambles
scratchin’ at my legs and arms
a blood trail for them dogs
who mean to do me harm
Night supposed to be my cover
darkness supposed to be my friend
but they a treacherous duo
they tryin’ to be my end

The cold don’t help none either
it burns ice deep in my chest
it be cuttin’ at my lungs
I be strugglin’ to take a breath
But Imma keep on running
even when that river come
I just gotta make it through
I see you Freedom, here I come!

I’ll lose them dogs in the water
the river gonna hide my scent
God, you gotta help me here—
(Please Lord I’m almost spent!)
It’s rising fast around me
that current be mighty strong
them dogs done made it to the shore
Oh Liberty, hear my song—

But the river got some helpers
some ugly, jagged rocks
the water gives me to them
It be betrayal, another shock—
My body bruised and broken
while them dogs bark and howl away
turns out I was fighting nature—
and nature took my soul today.
