Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) calls on editors and journalists covering Iran’s upcoming election to note:

▪︎These elections are neither free nor fair, as all viable opposition has been banned from running.
▪︎Any Iranian citizen who criticizes or calls for a boycott of this deeply flawed election process will continue to face arbitrary arrest, torture, and imprisonment.
▪︎Journalists are under severe pressure to toe the state line on the elections and will face expulsion, arrest, and prosecution for refusing to do so.

The international community, including the UN and global leaders should:

▪︎Publicly condemn these severe violations of freedom of expression and directly warn the Iranian authorities that intensifying diplomatic and economic consequences will follow the continuation of these unlawful arrests and detainments.
▪︎Be alert to the potential for increased state violence and repression as the election approaches, and forcefully condemn any violence against civil society.

Do you love your money, your status, your privileges, your shiny trinkets and glowing screens so much that you will are willing to turn a blind eye to repressive authoritarian regimes and terrorist networks operating around the globe? Do you feel safe and protected in your zoom meetings as you nod your heads and go along with their one-track narrative without thinking critically for yourselves and questioning their true motivations and aspirations? Do you believe they will protect you and care for you and keep you elevated on your glass pedestals as long as you keep going along with them?

What has happened to the world, to humanity, to our allied networks? What happened to the people who loved and cared about their neighbors, their communites, the connections between all of our nations, and between all of our relations so much that they were willing to take risks to tell the world about what's really going on in the cities and the towns, what was really happening on the ground to the people?

Where's your chutzpah? Did your diversity, equity and inclusion committee overlords threaten to castrate you of your cushy benefits, pensions, and other union perks if you reported on the reality of the situation on the ground? What happened to the investigative journalists who truly cared about freedom and democracy; who were invested in protecting human rights and the lives of their neighbors and communities; who were committed to telling the truth instead of being bribed and muzzled by associates of authoritarian regimes and the Brotherhood death cults?
