This explains the main function of the university.

The Primary function of the university

There exists a debate on the main role of the university. Some people think that universities should provide graduates with the knowledge and skills in the workplace. Others think that the true function of a university is to give access to knowledge for its own sake. In my opinion, the main function of the university is to provide knowledge and skills in the workplace. As much as universities give access to knowledge for their advantages such as becoming famous locally and internationally, their primary goal remains to equip graduates with relevant skills and knowledge including both theoretical and practical skills to thrive in their workplace. There exists a very huge and strong connection between universities and the modern professional world. Higher learning institutions are considered to be a bridge between academia and work. This means that universities have to try their best in all means to help their students so that they can be able to overcome all challenges that they may face in the job market after they graduate.
In the modern professional world, employers often seek candidates who have both theoretical and practical skills in their field of profession. Consider a student studying electrical engineering. The university ensures that the student is well-equipped with both theoretical and practical skills in electrical engineering. By doing this, the electrical engineer will be able to perform tasks such as repairing sockets and other electrical tasks such as dealing with electric transformers with no challenges because the student has all the required skills. By equipping the students with comprehensive knowledge that involves both theory and practical experience, the students will be well prepared and will succeed in their workplace. This implies that the students will perform various tasks at work with ease. By providing students with relevant theoretical and practical knowledge, universities prepare them to tackle the challenges of the job market (NCBI, 2021).
Universities should also provide skills and knowledge for the workplace to adapt to the changing nature of work. In the modern professional world, the modern professional world has changed effectively. This is because of factors such as advancements in technology, globalization, and shifts in market dynamics. The skills that were in demand several years ago are not the ones in demand today and also in several years to come, they will be very different. In this, the main function of the universities is to update their learning programs and services to reflect the changes and to be able to equip students with relevant skills and knowledge that is updated so that they can succeed and survive in the rapidly changing work environment. Consider a student studying software engineering. Several years ago, the skills demanded from software engineers were less because the technology at that time was not well developed. Today, there have been many advancements in technology such as the introduction of software packages such as chat GPT, and also advancements in programming languages. This means that the skills demanded from a software engineer will be more. Technology is evolving rapidly each day. This means that the skills demanded from software engineers in some years to come will be more. As technology continues to evolve, universities must update their curriculum to ensure that their students are well-equipped with relevant and updated skills and knowledge required to thrive in the future job market.
Universities have a role of equipping students with the skills and knowledge necessary for both successful professions and lifetime study. Universities provide skills and knowledge for the workplace to prepare students for successful careers and lifelong learning (NCES, 2016). To accomplish this, colleges should support professional development by giving students access to a range of tools and resources, including as networking opportunities, career seminars, mentoring programs, and hands-on learning experiences. The student can use these resources to help them for their future vocations and occupations. They make certain that the pupils have the relevant knowledge and abilities required for fulfilling professions.Think about a journalism student. Prominent members of the media can be invited to give career speeches to journalism students at the university. Many skills that the students can use when they start working are taught to them. The university can also ensure that it involves journalism students in events and allows them to put their skills to work. This will help them get a better view of what the journalism industry looks like. The universities should also partner with various partnership opportunities with various companies for attachment and job opportunities. These partnerships provide the students with hands-on learning experiences, industry insights, and opportunities to network with professionals in their field of study (D'Abate et al., 2018). Overall, the university should provide skills and knowledge for the graduates so that they can improve and be successful in their careers.
Universities can also provide skills and knowledge for the job market so that the students will be able to overcome the challenges they will face at work. Universities can achieve this by ensuring that the students are equipped with skills such as time management, teamwork, communication skills, and other social skills that will be useful to them in the job market. This will help the graduate to be able to manage complex projects, communicate effectively with colleagues and clients, and also be able to adapt to new technologies in the job market. Universities should make sure that they improve student learning by embracing innovations and new technologies. They should also ensure that they create a perfect work environment for the stuudents which is almost similar to the modern professional world. This is to ensure that the students get equipped with all relevant skills and knowledge to be able to overcome the challenges they may face in the job market.
Universities should also provide skills and knowledge and skills to ensure economic growth in the country. A country with a high population of skilled personnel who are in the labor market tends to have a rise in economic growth. This is due to factors such as the payment of taxes by the ones in the labor market. For universities to do this, they must ensure that they do their best to provide one of the best professional personnel. High-skilled personnel also tend to be paid higher earnings by their employers. This means that the tax they will be giving to the government will be higher. In a country with many professional personnel in the labor market, the flow of income is at a very satisfying level for the country. The income generated tends to be high and this may lead to a rise in the Gross Domestic Product of the country. A country with a high gross domestic product has a lot of advancements for example in technology, infrastructure for example roads, railway lines, and government services such as hospitals and schools. This is all due to the economic growth. The universities should make sure that they improve their quality of education to bring out the best and most qualified professionals who will get well-paying jobs thus leading to a rise in economic growth of the government.
Another reason why universities should provide students with relevant skills and knowledge for the workplace is to ensure that the students are equipped with all relevant problem-solving skills. Some of the problem-solving skills include critical thinking, creativity, and analytical skills. To be able to achieve this, universities should ensure that they engage their students in research projects. As the students do these projects, they engage in critical thinking and creativity which prepares them to solve complex projects in the workplace.
In conclusion, universities should ensure they try their best so as to provide relevant skills needed by their graduates for the job market. They should incorporate all possible methods to prepare the students for all kinds of challenges they may face in the job market. As long as universities provide knowledge and skills for their own gain, this remains to be their primary goal.
