He'd threaten them with this lie
"My father is a policeman
He'll take you off to jail!"
"Why would he do that?"
"If you tell the tale!"

So the seven year old
Never showed that he'd been bullied
The adults, noticing nothing
Were not terribly worried.

"My father is a policeman!
He'll beat you up, you know!"
Stated with such authority
It seemed decidedly so.

No one knew that he was lying
He got away with anything
Stealing their lunch, taking pencils
Pushing them off the swing.

"My father is a policeman!"
They thought that it was so
With many years of school ahead
They had so far to go.

They had to stay on his good side
Obey commands, all in a rush
Speak when spoken to, otherwise
they had to hush.

Once at the cross-roads
He didn't heed the warning light
"My father is a policeman,
I can walk now all right."

The car screeched to a halt
Just in time to avoid tragedy
"What's the matter with you?
Folks like you are a malady!"

He sneered at the man
Till he saw who it was
The Chief Constable of Police
Every policeman's boss!

In one minute, amidst the crowds
The lie was uncovered
"His Dad isn't a policeman!"
And he was shown up as a coward.
