Kingdom

in the distance stood a castle, walls up and guarded
the princess locked herself away
for she was afraid of falling
of being torn apart by outside forces
in her tower she stayed, bathed in darkness
for she was afraid of others
seeing her fight the war within herself
clothed in the shadows of the night
she appeared at the window
looking out at the kingdom she left behind

in her tower she stayed, waiting
pacing and anxious
worrying things would never change
and she would always be the same
hours and days passed by
no one showed up to be her savior
to save her from losing herself
the princess begged for understanding
wanting answers from outside forces
of how to break down the walls of her castle and be free

the princess locked herself away
as she fought the war within herself
breaking apart the invisible chains
that for so long kept her at the midnight hour
she finally understood
that no one was coming to save her
that she was the savior of herself
in the distance stood a castle, walls crumbled
the princess opened her windows
standing there bathed in lightness
