Sam Adams was late
For his first dinner date
With his new girlfriend.

Rummaging through his clothes,
He realized he had a single sock
That would not do.

He ran out
Bought some new socks,
Ran into the street,
Dodging the merging traffic.

Getting there just on time
For his dinner date,
He felt he had met his fate.

When he arrived
She was amused
Pointing out
His mismatched socks.

They laughed
As he told her the story.

She said,

“let me pick your socks next time,
You have no fashion sense.”

They laughed
As they drank their coffee.
And looked at the menu.

And that was that
The beginnings
Of a forty-two-year love story.
