Flash Fiction
That Day

Dorothy stood in the line at the bank, dreading getting to the front, unsure what to say. Her account was definitely overdrawn, but she had no recollection of writing that last check.

It actually looked as if she had written it, even to her! Exactly like her own handwriting, and whoever wrote it even put the little lines through the zeros, just like she always did (and always got teased about.) But she was positive she did not, would not, have written that check!

First of all, she never had that much money in her account! She often didn’t have enough to pay her bills on time. Second, she had no idea who the person who cashed the check was! Gerald Tinman. She didn’t know anyone by that name. All she had was the picture of the check the bank sent her. She needed to see the real check, to figure out what had happened. Two more people in front of her, she had no idea what she would say even when she got there.

Suddenly a tap on her shoulder, she literally jumped. Lost in thought, she’d forgotten how crowded it was. Turning, the man behind her, said, “Excuse me, Dorothy, I have a message for you.”

She didn’t recognize him, he knew her name! Feeling a bit brave by the crowd around them, she spoke, “I don’t seem to know you, how do you know me?”

“We were on a trip together, years ago. I look different now.”

“What trip? I don’t seem to remember any trips…” she said, now feeling it was a scam, he was after her money, she almost laughed.

“In OZ,” he said, “and we are needed back…”

Dorothy fainted, and when she came to, she was not in the bank anymore.
