Contest Entry for Honoring our Veterans - December 2022
Born to Serve

Tiny, so helpless
Born far too early
Head full of hair
Dark and curly

Incubator, tubes
Little white diaper
Ten teeny toes
Pacifier

His homecoming brings
Both tears and relief
So very glad
It is not grief

In time he becomes
A strapping young man
Strong, broad shoulders
Starting to plan

His life beyond home
A purpose to fill
Parents so proud
Yet worried still

He chooses his branch
His hopes and his dreams
Something bigger
Part of a team

Becoming much more
Than ever he thought
A sense of self
That can’t be bought

When his time is done
And he returns home
No matter where
Never alone

The bond that was formed
More than just token
Life long, hard forged
Never broken
