A Special Day

Mary glanced at the refrigerator calendar. “Huh. Guess what today is.”

George glanced at Mary for a second, then returned to his daily newspaper. “No clue. Perhaps Saturday?”

“No, goofball. But pretty good guess. The calendar says it’s Happy Hour Day. Who knew! Oh, and Fancy Rat and Mouse Day.”

George laughed, “Like mice and rats need a special day. It’s a special day when they are gone. Invent a decent rodent trap and I’ll declare a national holiday for sure!” His point made, George returned to the newspaper.

“But we can celebrate Happy Hour Day! Whadya say? Let’s tie one on, George. You and me, have a real hoot of a time. We’ll drag out the bottle and have a few. I’ll make some snacks, we’ll play some music. It’ll be fun. Happy, for an Hour!”

“An entire hour of happiness? And when will this wonderful event happen?” George sighed, wary of Mary’s impending plans.

“Oh, what about 5:00? Or now! As they say, it’s always 5 o’clock somewhere!” She twirled about, her chenille robe revealing bare legs and slippered feet. “I’ll make avocado toast! And bacon! Lots of bacon. And waffles with chocolate chips and pecans and real maple syrup.” Skipping about the kitchen, Mary started taking out pans and bowls, food and utensils.

“Hold on, don’t you think you should get dressed first?”

“What? And ruin the momentum? No babe, I’m on a roll. Watch out, Mary’s cooking.”

George folded his newspaper, headed to the top shelf of the pantry where they kept the whiskey. He found two glasses, poured two drinks. Then he settled back in the kitchen to watch the whirlwind at work. As he sipped, Mary created brunch for them.

As promised, avocado toast, bacon, waffles, and maple syrup appeared on the kitchen table served by the woman he loved in a chenille robe.

They sat eating brunch and drinking whiskey at 11 AM as they listened to the old music on a real stereo. Because it is always 5 o’clock somewhere.
