“Are you out of your mind?” just flew out of my mouth as we approached the cave. “I’m not going in there.”

“It’s either that or die of exposure, Lucy!”

The temperature had dropped 30 degrees in the last hour, the wind was picking up, and ice crystals were cutting into our cheeks.

“We aren’t dressed for this, and we can’t make it back to the lodge before this storm gobbles us up, honey.”

“I can’t believe I listened to you and didn’t follow my own instincts, honey.”

“It’s my fault, Lucy?”

“This was your idea!”

The hike was Peter’s idea. I wanted to check out our private hot tub instead. It was our honeymoon, after all.

“Sorry to disappoint.”

I was about to try defusing the situation when, out of the corner of my eye, I saw something run past-- something big and hairy.

“Did you see that?”

“See what?”

“Something big and hairy. I think it went into the cave.”

“Sasquatch, perhaps?”

“Not kidding, Peter!”

“You’ll say anything to get out of doing something, Lucy.”

“Really?”

“Yes, really! I know we just got married but I’ve known you for two years.”

We stood in stony silence near the mouth of the cave, slowly freezing to death.

I heard a low growl coming from the opening. “Did you hear that?”

“I did.”

“I’d rather freeze to death than go in there, Peter.” I turned and headed back down the trail.

A loud howl bellowed forth from the cave.

Peter caught up with me. “Let’s run. Maybe we can make it back.”

So we ran…

And we did make it back to the lodge relatively unscathed, considering.

What are we doing right now?

We are enjoying our private hot tub. The honeymoon is going swimmingly...finally!
