He was one aisle over.

“We have to go!” Abby tugged on Sally’s arm.

“We just got here.”

“He’s here.”

“Who’s here?”

“The guy from the blind date.”

“So?”

It had been the blind date from hell. He’d been leaving scary messages on Abby's phone: “You can’t avoid me forever. I’m taking you to Heaven when I go.” “Abby, I know at the End Times, you want me to be holding you.”

“I filed a police report, Sally. Remember?”

“That guy?”

“That guy.”

“He’s here?”

“In the automotive aisle.”

Sally led Abby to the back of the furniture department.

“My uncle worked at the loading dock. Follow me.”

They walked through the door labeled “No entry” and hurried down the ramp at the back of the Big Lots building.

“Should we call the cops?” Sally was hyperventilating.

“No. I don’t think he saw us. He doesn’t know where I live. Let’s just get to the car.”

Abby dropped off Sally and continued toward home. The streetlights had just come on as she pulled into her driveway.

She kicked off her shoes and poured herself a glass of merlot.

The phone rang. She let the machine answer.

“Abby, it’s me! Pick up.”

Abby picked up. “So far so good.”

“What was he doing in Big Lots?”

“Shopping? Probably a coincidence.”

“Could he have followed—”

The line went dead.

The power went off.

The doorbell rang.

Abby couldn’t see anyone through the peephole. She inched the door open.

He pushed his way in. Her cellphone was in her purse on the kitchen counter. Abby tried to keep her composure as he grasped her hands.

“I missed you, Abby.”

“You’re hurting me!”

“I have one question before we meet our Maker,” he said. “Did you miss me?”
