this is a poem about human nature and the human spirit.
The Dragon lived within my dreams,
he never came alive,
Until that night it happened,
it really is no lie.

I was sleeping deep and dreaming
about that white horse I rode,
the day I helped the Dragon
protect his horde of gold.

I was not dressed for battle,
I was only wandering that day,
as I was not expecting
to ride into a fray.

I heard the Dragons roar,
I smelled the fires smoke,
the thieves had come in while he'd slept
but then he had awoke.

I saw he was outnumbered,
it did not seem quite fair,
but as I reached for my sword
I realized it was not there.

Bolstering my courage,
a grim visage on my face,
I put my heels to the horse
and rode into the place.

The Dragon was bristling with spears,
the blood was flowing strong,
I feared if I did not end this fight
he would not live for long.

I jumped upon the first brigand,
I knocked him to the ground,
when I whirled toward the other two
my fury was unbound.

I fought with a passion and a purpose
I thought was just and right,
and as I let out a battle cry
I saw them pale with fright.

I heard his cry and saw the wounds
when they began to flee,
it seems I had arrived too late
as he was wounded mortally.

He said wake up my good friend
your family is at risk,
and as he said the words,
the air had grown quite brisk,

I awoke inside my den,
the window was ajar,
I thought of my friend, the dragon,
in his land that was afar.

I remembered clearly what he'd said,
I sprang up from my seat,
And it was when I opened the door
that first I felt the heat.

The house was burning I could see,
there was no way by,
that was when he appeared
and looked me in the eye.

I did not stop to think
of how he might be here,
as my family up those burning stairs
was my greatest fear.

I started to run through the flames
across the wooden floor,
he took one step toward the stairs
and the burning door.

Side by side with a purpose,
our determination clear,
we headed up the smoke filled stairs
to save those I hold most dear.

The smoke seared our throats
and the flames burned our skin,
and I thought that with him there
this was a race I'd win.

When we had saved them,
my children and my wife,
I realized with a shock
it had cost the Dragon his life.

He fought so hard against the pain,
the spears still in his side,
he looked at me as if to plead
with eyes so full and wide.

He died there in my house
and then began to fade away,
dreams have a way of doing that
but not it seems today.

I would remember the Dragon all my days,
I never would forget,
the way that he had given his life,
without a moments regret.

Then it was all before me,
the reason for my dreams,
we had a lot in common,
the Dragon and I it seems.

His treasure was so dear to him,
his horde of gold you see,
just as my treasure was to me,
my loving family.
