poem celebrating my mother.
you smelled of cigarette smoke and coffee
I remember that
you couldn't sing a tune if you carried it in sealed Tupperware
I remember that
your hugs were warm, sometimes wet with my tears
I remember that
you raised me with love and compassion
I remember that
a decade has passed since you left me
I remember that
things have begun to fade, like your face
I don't quite remember that
the sound of your voice telling me you love me
I don't remember that
