In the Heat of Battle

Between hope and faith is a space--
no wider than a single atom--
where virtues
are conceived and grow.

Here they wait,
ready to emerge
when the internal struggle
between soul and ego intensifies
and ego threatens
to subdue the soul.

This is the defining moment,
when the power of grace transforms
weakness into strength
and doubt into confidence.

It is in the heat of battle
that virtues become
the soul's weapons against
the ego's vices.
