Will she remain alone, or is there hope of their return?
I watch the sunrise -
that life-giving coin that spreads its fortune
indiscriminately
over wealthy and poor
and the creatures of yore
(like me)
as it ascends in quiet dignity
with rays of orange, yellow and white,
filling dark spaces with light,
and breathing wamth into my cave,
yet I feel cold.

It is love that I crave.
With the others having slipped beyond the veil of time,
I am alone, hidden,
and whilst it hardly seems possible
that deep yearning still surfaces, unbidden,
with every dawn.

So I watch, and I wait,
and I wonder:
will this be the one?
Will another Age of Dragons arrive?
Or am I doomed to survive
on my own?
With the crushing weight of centuries upon me,
I lay down my head, sigh,
and close my eyes.

Something stirs.
When I turn, I see a crack appear,
in my long-quiet eggs,
and I shed a tear,
whilst my heart sings,
welcoming a bright new year.
