January Entry for the Lighthouse Poetry Contest
Enlightenment he seeks, and knowledge he desires
That he be known as wise

Daily he labours, he searches the inner thoughts of men;
Yet darkness is what he perceived:
Crooked hearts with evil brimmed, such that his faith recedes
His sight became dimmed, as vexation gripped
His folly made forget
That the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.

So onto pleasures he goes
From the law he departs, and the Word he compromises

In drunkenness he steeps, in revelry and strife
For a fool knows no sorrow
He drowns in mirth and laughter, with no worries of tomorrow
His cares subdued by sufficiency
Ebbing an echo of once-held belief, slowly forgotten:
A good understanding have all they that do his commandments.

But the Lord, He is good
The smoldering wick He shall not quench

When prestige loses its sheen, and worldly cares disappoints
His Spirit descends
A revealing light is His glory, and uncertainty will end
As the Man sees the light, his conceit falls apart
And his knees bends low, his tongue shall declare
His praise endureth for ever.
