Not your normal zombie story. |
If you are searching for a happy story go away. This will not be a happy story. This will, however, be a realistic story. This is for the people that understand life is hard, people that know life is not a happy story. This is not about the group of survivors that band together to survive and fight for humanity. This is not about finding the cure. This is about those that climbed from the debris of our fallen world, stumbled to the doors of those groups that preach safety and hope for all, and were turned away. We are the weak. The ones not special enough to join the cause. We are the outcasts, the ones that crawl the Earth looking for something to keep us going because we did not deserve the hope of the chosen. The outbreak happened quick mutated slowly but strategically. In the beginning, the only way to contract the virus was to breathe it in. Then once it had enough people, it changed completely. The few not sick got to watch the bedridden climb from there hospital beds and tear the people trying to heal them limb from limb. Our friends and family all changed. For some, it took hours, for some days, few are still waiting to change. Since then we could breathe the air but if you got bit you were lost. She was my life. She was my everything. I promised that I would stay by her side through sickness and health. She was bitten by our daughter. That was three months ago. We're still waiting for her to change. We listened in our house as the colonies of people joined together to look for a cure. We hid and waited. We listened as each first appeared on the air, and as each went silent. She hasn't gotten sick yet. She still looks healthy and feels fine. Her long brown hair falls over her face the same way as when I met her. She is my everything and these are our last days together. This is our story. "GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE!" The sound of the guard's voice was raspy from the ash in the air. A defeated L turns to walk away like so many times before. "So that's it?" I press, "You hide behind your safe walls while people out here die every fucking day." "Are you a dumbass? She's clearly bitten, we can not take her in." The guard coughs up. Now I'm curious as to whether his voice is due to the ash or to years of smoking. "SHE IS A FUCKING PERSON!", I plead tears of anger pushing their way through my eyes smudging my sight. "JUST BECAUSE I PERSON IS SICK DOES NOT MAKE HER LESS OF A GODDAMN PERSON! BUT NO YOU DECIDE WHO GETS TO LIVE AND DIE HUH?" I subconsciously take steps towards the armed guard. The sound of debris crackles underfoot as piles of dead bodies burn around us. The agitated man clenches his fists around his rifle, reaffirming his authority here. The warm light from the fires lights the night enough for me to notice these people here are no more human than the monsters they're burning on the sides of the road leading towards their sheet metal gate. L grabs my arm waking me from my rage-filled pursuit. "Let's just go", she pleads her voice wavering in fear. Taking one last look at the lumbering man I turn to leave L's hand in mine. "That's right listen to the zombie bitch!", the guard calls laughing to himself. I stop, the light from there spotlight lighting the destroyed asphalt road. " You know." I chuckle to myself slowly turning and walking towards the dumbfounded guard clearly shocked by the fact I'm returning to his shit face. " Before you turn poor helpless people away at your door." I step closer towards him than ever before allowing me to smell the deep whiskey scent protruding from his worthless pores. "Search both people." The shot rang throughout the air. Before I turn to join L at her side I get a glimpse of he shocked expression as he clutches he oversized gut. "GUARDS! GET THOSE FUCKERS!", a man from inside the opening gate yells after us. I grab L's hand as we flee the shouts of the guards chasing us, bullets whistling by our heads. We don't have to run far before they give up on their pursuit. I guess the threat of zombies hearing their shots scare them more than they want justice for their very rude friend. |
