Through the eyes of a child: Magic still exists. A Story-Poem Entry
Dragons in the Garden

I went into the garden and sat beside the old oak tree.
“I’d be underfoot,” Mom said as she was cooking.
What a funny saying; she’s never stepped on me.
So I went to my special place just to do some looking.

The evening mist was forming and drifted in the air
as I explored my special place when there was a sound.
I tip-toed to the backyard fence, taking greatest care,
when suddenly – you’ll never guess – what I saw on the ground.

It was a little dragon; he was green with golden wings.
He climbed up on my hand and stared right back at me.
He told me little stories about all kinds of things
and made me promise not to tell and keep his secrecy.

He told me I was special. I could see and talk to him.
He said that grown up people have lost imagination.
He said he lived high on the tree and watched us from a limb
but no one ever noticed him – a source of great frustration.

He told me of the “in-between” where only children go;
a place where dragons live and magic still exists.
He told me of the wonders there that only children know.
How the clouds are just like slides, full of turns and twists.

He said that I could travel there, together we could fly
which caused me to giggle at such a silly thought.
He was too small to carry me although I’d like to try.
I wished that he was bigger than my Mom’s teapot.

I heard my mother calling me so I asked if he could wait.
I had to go for supper or Mom would get quite cross.
I promised him a tasty snack from my dinner plate.
I’m sure I can sneak some broccoli. For me, that’s not a loss.

When I snuck back after dinner, he wasn’t there no more.
I guess there’s only special times when dragons can appear
but sometimes on misty evenings, I hear a tiny roar
and I know inside my heart that he’s still somewhere near.
