Dreamscape on Jeweled Isle

The Road to Hana

Verdant broccoli reaches for amber sun--
bamboo looks so different underneath its crown
where tall stalks arrow upwards. Rains drips in
rhinestone chips cascading down,
leaf to leaf, to puddle on fertile, mossy ground.
Tradewinds blow off sapphire sea
to rattle tremblant growing sticks
in musical menages of clacks and clicks that resonate.
Invasive viines arabesque as if woodsprites arranged them just so
in dark of moon.

Lava castings strewn across beaches,
eroded shapes fall from prior flows where air bubbles once burst
yet filled again, balls and sockets of Madam Pele's machinizations.
Stygian filigree, etched by tides, relentless waves
forms distinct designs when viewed from cliffside.
Alabaster and pearl contrast with ebony
where quartzite pales through erosion,
where opal sands wash with jet beads worn round and smooth
sharing pacific waters with pale pink corals:
choker of baroque beads worn 'round the neck of the island.
Ever changing: lava grinds all to dust in time.

Aquamarine showers flash in evening sun,
where all is gilded gold, shimmering cascade of liquid fire.
Cacaphony of bird calls erupt as birds take wing,
circling treetops in search of night nibbles. Ever present amonst bird song
highest piano notes of falling water; on leaf, on hollowed log, on timbered bamboo stem.
Off-shore humpback breaches; lands in eruption of oriental white.
Dusk washes out all colors except bleeding sky
where rose mauves to amythist,
where pale blue waters meet midnight seas.
Fire orb sinks in emerald flash:
mere breathtaking moments when the world is viewed
through water-color patina: This, this is the Road to Hana.
