Pumpkin Pie

There used to be a time when Pumpkin
Came around once a year
Some turned into pumpkins,
But more importantly they turned into....
A pie
There were no pumpkin spiced lattes
or any other such concoction.
It was simple a pie
And a homemade one at that.
Thanksgiving was synonymous
With pumpkin pie
And turkey with dressing
And mashed potatoes
And even some dreaded turnip
But dessert was la piece de la resistance
Crowning glory of a meal made with love
It was warmed and fresh
With a dollop of whipped cream
To cover its top
Whizzed up with an egg beater
A little sugar and cream
With a dash of vanilla
For luck.
This was what Thanksgiving
And its memories
Brought to me.
